We are birds of a feather who fly together.

Alone, I didn’t think I could do it.

Uncertain, unsteady, confused.

Then I met you.

And we did it together.

All of a sudden, my doubts disintegrated,

As miracles unfolded just through the nearness of you.

And I watched my little lies of lack vanish in the wake of our union.

With two pairs of hands at work, we dug deeper, lifted higher, travelled further.

When I stumbled, you caught me and let me rest while you took up the slack.

When you fell, I was too weak to lift you, so I whispered love in your ear until your strength was restored.

And so it went on.

We kept taking it in turns,

Exchanging courage and kindness.

Swapping faith and fatigue back and forth between us.

Rising and falling.

Diving down and swooping up again,

Finding rest in the nest of each other’s arms.

Tumbling over and through each other.

Wrapping ourselves round each other.

Breathing life into each other.

Over and through. Up and down.

Back and forth. Round and round.

Until we got so jumbled up that it became impossible to separate fantasy from daily life.

And the warmth of our togetherness made us forget what loneliness felt like.

And all we knew was the safety of two.

Grey skies ousted by golden-red sunsets.

A glorious daydream engorged with colour.

Drenched in sweetness.

Dripping with divinity.

Still in progress…

But there were also very hard times when winter outstayed its welcome and we both collapsed, frozen and frightened, with nothing left to give.

When the only way we managed to hold onto hope was by holding each other’s hands.

And all we could do was lie on the ice until the fickle sun finally remembered its duty and revived us once more.

You and I.

Both lover and beloved.

Devoted and devotee.

Together.

Until death do us part.

And beyond.

A sacred bond underpinning, outlasting it all.

The meaning of life in a smile, a look, a touch.

In the recognition of all that we are behind the facade of flesh.

We are birds of a feather who fly together.

And when we fly together, we soar!
